You Really Should Read This Book
By Leonard klein
If you are a teacher and are anything like me you have lots of professional development books on your bookshelf. You have read some, you have started some and then made a less than kind remark about the author, you have some you opened and realized this was not for you. Too many fall into the second category and not enough in the first. John Almarode’s book is in the first - I read it all the way through and I have actually used parts of it to help design lessons, this is a first.
I will admit that I did not read all the book, there were parts I skipped over and sections I skimmed. John has a tendency to want you to know everything he knows and that gets to be too much for me. I just want to know how to get my students more engaged. There is a chapter on the brain and how it works, I was not that interested at this point, so I skipped over that. BUT the vast majority of the book was very helpful to me and I would strongly recommend this book to you. If you read the book, picking out what is useful to you now and go back later there will be other things that will be useful. It is a book I plan to reread and reread.
Full disclosure - I know John. He was a student in my class when he was a student at Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School and I taught with him before he returned to school for his Ph. D. As I read his book I could hear John teaching, he really does use the words in the book. He teaches as he suggests you teach and he had great results. Why did I then not teach as he suggest then? Well I thought I was being successful with the way I was going at that time and saw no reason to change. I am now not so sure I am being as successful as I would like to be and feel that a change would be good. This book is directed toward my students, 11th and 12th grade STEM students. As I read the book I found parts that spoke to me at that time and I put the book down and worked out a lesson plan based on what I had read. I then went back are read more and wrote another lesson plan. As this school year progresses I will do more of this, read and write.
If you feel as I did that your teaching needs a change I would highly recommend this book to you. I bought my own copy and am glad I did.

Fabulous and Practical
By Kelly McDonnell
I am a "science junkie" and absolutely loved the book!
The beauty of this book is that it does the "big 3" that every author should try to do.
First, the book is based on quality research. Every idea, concept an strategy is based
on real research, not pseudoscience.
Second, the book is superbly practical. Every page or two has quality, actionable
and highly specific classroom strategies you can use immediately.
Third, the book is clear, with a clean format and great design. It is easy to read
and easy to use.
Dr. Almarode clearly knows this research and it shows up. I'm giving this book
a "two thumbs up" and "five stars" for accessibility and use. I plan to recommend
this book to many others.
This is a winner--buy it!
