What is “the right price?”

Pricing is one of the trickiest elements of any business. Price too high and you risk losing business you want to win. Discount too often or too much, and you risk people thinking your product is cheap or you’re for sale. The other problem with a poor pricing strategy is that you will go broke selling to the wrong customers.

In Pricing for Profit, Hill argues that “most businesses are already worth more than they have the courage to charge.”

What I love about Pricing for Profit is that Hill talks about the value scale and why pricing is really about what the value is to each customer or client. For example, I often shop at Whole Foods because it’s convenient (quick) and the quality is good. But it’s certainly not cheap. I shop at Amazon, on the other hand, because it is good and cheap. But it’s takes longer to get a new product in my hands than if I just walked into my neighborhood Best Buy.

Like the best business books, Pricing for Profit is meant to be actionable. Chapters on creating packages, choices, and options offer new ways to think about what you’re offering and how you’re selling. And the entire book is filled with action steps to think through how to implement a smarter pricing strategy for your business. The quickest and most effective way to improve the profitability of your business is to raise your prices, according to Peter Hill in this book. You should also be aiming to increase the number of customers, the frequency of transactions, the average value of each transaction, and the efficiency of the business, but price rises have the fastest and most direct effect on your profits.

The problem is that most business owners find it very difficult to raise prices. People naturally want to please others and avoid the risk of complaints and confrontation, so they find it much easier to pursue almost any other course of action. Accordingly, the author provides numerous different suggestions of ways in which prices can be increased in a manner which minimises the amount of stress and the fear of losing valuable customers, including:

* Limit discounts, for example by requiring timely payment in exchange
* Replace all discounts with cash-back offers, as the cash is not given back until payment is made and it is more painful to give cash than a discount, so that the total amount given away is likely to reduce over time
* Use prices which are not round numbers, because they are less likely to attract bargaining
* Instead of giving discounts, add more value to your offering
* Make sure you communicate the value which you are providing
* Build future contact into the deal for the initial sale
* Have a very top-of-the-range option that is significantly more expensive than any other option; this will make your other offerings appear to have better value
* Ask customers for permission to increase prices
* Offer a money-back guarantee to justify a higher price

The contents of the book are easily understandable by a business person who has no training in financial management. I did not find anything particularly new while reading, but by the end of the book the author had thoroughly persuaded me that trying to win customers by offering bigger and bigger discounts is not likely to lead to a profitable outcome. I highly recommend the book for anyone who runs a business.

About the Author

Fiona Kennedy, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, was formerly an NHS Director of Psychology and is now MD of GreenWood Mentors Ltd. She has published on dissociation and specializes clinically in adult survivors of trauma, personality disorder and dissociation.

Helen Kennerley, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, is a founder member of the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre and Director of the Diploma/MSc in Advanced Cognitive Therapy Studies. She is an experienced clinician specializing in childhood trauma, dissociative disorders and self-injurious behaviours.

David Pearson, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, is a specialist in child and adolescent mental health, formerly an NHS Head of Psychology and Honorary Tutor at the University of Southampton. He has published in a number of peer-reviewed journals.

This ish is boring. Helen Keller would agree. However, my woman's school thinks this is important to read, so I guess, different strokes for different folks. If you thought your life was boring, please read this book. You will soon realize your life is almost as exciting as Point Break. Not quite as exciting, but pretty close. But, digest. Read it if required, otherwise, probably avoid it.

Instant OpenNMS Starter lives up to its title

Instant OpenNMS Starter is one title in Packt Publishing's line of "Instant" books. The book is a mere 60 pages long and was published in June of 2013. I recently had to work with a greenfield OpenNMS deployment for a small office and was shocked at the lack of learning resources for the software.

Usually a FOSS project of the size and tenure that OpenNMS is would have a large library of books, both officially published and community created. OpenNMS seems to be rather behind in the documentation department compared to other similar projects. This book is a welcome addition to the meager resources available to learn about such a long-lasting and truly FOSS NMS. Packt publishing offers their eBooks in ePub, mobi, and PDF. I was thus able to read this book on my eInk Kindle Touch, which I was happy about.

The Book:

It's not really organized by chapters. It's essentially one big chapter titled "instant OpenNMS Starter" with multiple bullet points underneath it. A look at the table of contents on the Packt Publishing website confirms that it's merely a long bulleted list of different bite sized topics.

Manage your expectations:

It is self evident, based on the title of the book and page count, that this is truly a quick start guide. This is not a book that attempts to exhaust anything. Fast readers can finish this book in a lunch break. I'm a slow reader preferring to dawdle and pause as I Google topics that intrigue me in the pages. Even so, it took less than three hours for me to finish.

Based Upon a Creaky Foundation:

A lot of the Instant OpenNMS Starter is based upon the OpenNMS documentation / wiki, which is notoriously slim. The first quarter of the starter, mostly referring to how to install OpenNMS, will often reference the documentation, which is somewhat rough. I've implemented OpenNMS myself based on the documentation and was underwhelmed.

At times in the Instant OpenNMS Starter it will admit that certain features of OpenNMS are sparsely documented and that you'll simply have to look at existing code and config files to figure it out on your own. An actual quote from the book concerning polling custom services says "...good documentation for achieving this is missing at the moment." In another location, the use of actiond and scriptd services for automation is touched upon and then left as an exercise to the reader saying: "The little documentation on how to achieve this can be found at..." along with a link.

But Wait! It's Actually Good!

Okay, so at this point maybe I've sounded a little pessimistic. I don't mean it to sound that way at all. The book is well done and fills a gap that exists in regards to getting people up and running quickly and reliably with a broad base of understanding that they can move forward with.

It initially starts with a general overview of what OpenNMS is and what niche it fills. It mentions the ITU's landmark document "M.3010: Principles for a telecommunications management network" and how OpenNMS conforms to it. It briefly mentions FCAPS and OpenNMS's role to play in that framework.

After those very briefly touched upon topics, it launches a quick introduction on how to install OpenNMS, including selecting the JDK, configuring PostgreSQL a little bit, and finding proper repos. Once that's done, it introduces you to some overall concepts in the OpenNMS world. In so doing, it uses the theoretical situation of an IT services company that has their own infrastructure to manage as well as customer services to watch over. I found that bit of realism very helpful, even in such a brief book, to make the bite-sized concepts gel.

The web user interface is touched on, host discovery, and some of the "out-of-the-box features" like events and alarms are introduced. After that, more advanced topics are brushed over such as how to organize users in groups and use categories to make a hierarchy of notification paths. All the while the scenario of an IT services company is used to show brief, real-world use cases for these features.

Then comes the largest single portion of the book, the meatiest section, "Top 5 Features You Need to Know About." Those five features are, in order:

Service Assurance Through Polling
Data Collection Through Collectors
Thresholds and Notifications
Events, Alarms, and Automations
Reports

Each of those sections gives you point by point insight into the basics, and sometimes the intermediate insights, of the topics at hand. I was impressed that most times the actual .xml config files were explored rather than simply showing how to do something in the web GUI. Even automation (a sparse feature in OpenNMS) was explored a bit, including making custom actions that execute SQL queries.

Final Word:

This is what has been needed in the OpenNMS community for people just getting off the ground. In my experience as just such an individual not too long ago, there is no sufficient quick start guide in the official OpenNMS wiki that is broad, thorough, and accurate enough to get you started on a solid course to continuing education. There were parts of the book that had some rough grammar, tense, and even doubled words, but those are minor editorial mistakes that I'm sure will be taken care of shortly and they certainly don't detract from the meat of the book.

At many points during the few hours it took to finish this book, I found myself saying "Ohhhh! So that's how it works..." and this is after having spent hours scouring the wiki, implementing OpenNMS myself, and working with it for a short time. If you are new to OpenNMS or considering it, I don't think you could go wrong by spending a lunch break reading through this. You might get some good ideas on how to take your implementation of OpenNMS to the next level. The Instant OpenNMS Starter won't take you there itself, but it will give you pointers to a few good paths that you can walk yourself down.

Packed with information for beginners and intermediate

The book itself is short, but packed with information. A fast reader with some experience with OpenNMS should be able to finish it in 4 to 6 hours. Beginners will probably want to follow the pointers to the online documentation, check the configuration files and possibly experiment so they should allocate more time.

Before being published the book has been reviewed by Jeff Gehlbach. Anyone who has been involved with OpenNMS for some time know him, as he is one of the many brilliant minds working for the OpenNMS company, the commercial entity which develops and supports OpenNMS. Surely his involvement serves as a kind of seal of quality for the book. I for one was surprised by the clarity with even the most complex aspects of OpenNMS were presented in such a short text.

The book is divided in three main parts: installation, quick start and an advanced section that the book calls `the top 5 features'. The final section is a reference of sites and humans with more information on OpenNMS.

The author has been careful to link to the relevant sections of the online wiki when he felt that the wiki content was adequate, without devoiding the book of any additional practical information. For instance in the installation section he actually describes a more secure way of installing OpenNMS than that described in the online user guide and he does so by simply citing the extra steps while leaving to the online documentation to specify the rest.

The quick start section is useful for those in a hurry to just have something monitored with OpenNMS and needing to for a pointer on what all those links in the web ui do.

The advanced section is where probably you will spent most of your time as it describes the most interesting features of OpenNMS which are:
1. service assurance through polling
2. data collection through collectors
3. thresholds and notifications
4. events, alarms and automations
5. reports

IMHO one glaring omission in this list is the Provisioning system ([...] which was introduced with OpenNMS 1.8 and is a key feature because it covers a critical aspect: how nodes are added into OpenNMS for monitoring. I reread the book twice hoping that perhaps it was mistake on my part, but I could not find a single reference to it.

The book covers each of the five areas with enough depth to give a dedicated beginner useful pointers and background on how to implement the most advanced features of OpenNMS. The author again intelligently uses links to the online wiki to extend the text.
Only the section on reports felt a little thin. In defense of the author one could say that the reports area is so complex that it would have quickly grown out of hand for this kind of book. Perhaps in a second edition he should consider expanding it to at least mention the possibility of creating Jasper reports from collected data.

Instant OpenNMS Starter is clearly aimed at, and I recommend it for, people starting with OpenNMS, evaluating it or who might have inherited a working installation and now have to maintain it. Users seeking to master one of the 5 areas listed above should certainly consider buying it when the online bits and pieces feel not enough or too sparse.
By the title it should come as no surprise that advanced users are not likely to find any new or useful information at all, but, again given the price and the short text, it could still be used as a kind of self-check.

This "book" has some useful information with regards to installing the software and a basic tour of the GUI and thats about it.
Very little information on even the most basic configuration.

Probably could have found more in-depth information on the OpenNMS wiki.
