Great advice for girls and their parents!

When I heard about this new book by Christine Fonseca I was right away intrigued. Being a mother of 3 girls, and one of them just turning 12, had me wanting to find out more. As a mother it is important to me to help my daughters feel important, and to try to give them the tools that can help them become better women in the future, and to grow up making wise choices. And as a mom sometimes I need help with this teaching business. After reading the description I decided to request an ARC to see if it was right for my girls, and could also be a tool to help me. And what I discovered is a great guideline that Christine has written for growing girls, and a help to parents.

The Girl Guide offers advice, guides, quizzes, exercises, worksheets, and goals to work on the help young girls make wise choices. There is help and advice for working out problems with friends and school. There are exercises and charts to fill out and make to help realize goals in life and what you can do to make them come true. It is a great book on helping teen girls find their own voice. And it has great quotes of wisdom spread throughout.

Some of my favorite things were when it explains how to make a Dream Poster. I think this is a great idea for everyone. Writing out your dreams and posting up pictures can help kids stay on track. And it is great idea to have it displayed as a reminder everyday. Another topic I loved was the explanation of rules. I have found it hard to get my pre-teen to understand that a lot of rules are for her safety, and this was explained very well for younger people to hopefully understand.

My most favorite idea in the book was keeping a gratitude journal. In a world that is becoming so negative and hard to survive in, I believe this is a great idea for everybody. I plan on getting all of my children a little notebook just for this that they can write a few things they are grateful for in it everyday. Hopefully this will make my family's lives more positive.

I found this book a great tool and plan on buying it for my daughter as soon as it is published.

What a guide!

I want to thank Prufrock Press and the author, Christine Fonseca, for providing me with and ARC of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free in no way influenced my opinion or review.

Before I get down to the nitty gritty, I can honestly tell you that I am not usually much of a non-fiction reader. I rather enjoy reading to get me out of reality. But, given the opportunity to review something for Christine Fonseca, I could not pass it up because I love her writing and I knew that I would enjoy the theme of this book. And enjoy I did!

I also want to mention how much I love this cover. When Christine was searching for a cover, she asked a few of use to look at some designs and vote on which one we liked best. This cover is actually the one I picked! I love the message the t-shirt sends!

Despite the fact that I am not a young teenage girl, the basic underlying theme of this book rings true to any woman of any age: be true to yourself, find what fits for you and use that to your advantage. Who couldn't like a book that aims to help people find their true selves? And Christine does not say this will be easy, in fact, she constantly reminds the reader that they need to dig deep within themselves to examine how to find themselves. So the guide helps girls see that life is not perfect, and that's ok. But it can turn out just as they want it if they find their true path.

And the way in which Fonseca goes about it is great. Each chapter gives the reader an opportunity to put their new found life skill to work. She integrates exercises that truly help a person get down to their basic understanding of themselves. I love the fact that the entire book really relies on the reader taking on projects to lay their life out before them: journals, posters, flashcards, quizzes, short stories from women young and older, and quotes that get your mind turning. Fonseca asks the reader to do whatever it takes to help them really be in control of who they are and how they find their true selves. She lays out great strategies to help young teens deal with stress, friendship, parents, school work and so much more.

If I had young girls, which I don't, I would grab this book right off the shelf and ask them to give it a try. As a matter of fact, I have three friends with daughters who would greatly benefit from reading this book, and they have agreed to do so! This is not just a book, it's a journey into the self that utilizes unique ideas to help young girls find their own unique self. I wish I had had a book like this when I was growing up.

Great tween resource!

I bought this book for my 6th grader. I have been thumbing through it myself and find it a great tool for tween girls. I am teaching a tween yoga class to 5th and 6th graders and may incorporate some of this book into the class... anytime there is a chance for confidence building at this age... it's great!

Everyone has a book on prosperity nowadays. Most simply rehash many of the new thought ideas of the past century adding sparkling new pieces of pizzazz to the packaging and using marketing elements like it's a big "secret" for promotion. In this time of manic busyness, Robert's book is like a breath of fresh air. Do we really need to be so busy, or are we being too busy to notice what's really important and worth our attention - and what isn't? Are we going in a direction that we believe will lead to a better life if we just work enough, sacrifice and struggle enough, or could we be enjoying a more fulfilling and meaningful life now?

An average good book

Is this a good book? Yes. Is this a great book? No.

In a nutshell, this book is basically a self-help on self-discovery. The author talks a lot about vision and purpose in life, but he does not define them. He directs his clients toward self-discovery.

The best part of the book is in chapter 1, "The Manic Society." After that, every chapter seems to be the same. He just talks about the same topic from different angles using different terms. The book is like a two dimensional space, lacking the third dimension and therefore depth or much substance.

Considerable attention has recently been focused on the importance of social networks and business culture in reducing transaction costs, both in the pre-industrial period and during the nineteenth century. This book brings together twelve original contributions by scholars in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and North America which represent important and innovative research on this topic. They cover two broad themes. First, the role of business culture in determining commercial success, in particular the importance of familial, religious, ethnic and associational connections in the working lives of merchants and the impact of business practices on family life. Second, the wider institutional and political framework for business operations, in particular the relationship between the political economy of trade and the cultural world of merchants in an era of transition from personal to corporate structures.

These key themes are developed in three separate sections, each with four contributions. They focus, in turn, on the role of culture in building and preserving businesses; the interplay between institutions, networks and power in determining commercial success or failure; and the significance of faith and the family in influencing business strategies and the direction of merchant enterprise. The wider historiographical context of the individual contributions is discussed in an extended introductory chapter which sets out the overall agenda of the book and provides a broader comparative framework for analysing the specific issues covered in each of the three sections. Taken together the collection offers an important addition to the available literature in this field and will attract a wide readership amongst business, cultural, maritime, economic, social and urban historians, as well as historical anthropologists, sociologists and other social scientists whose research embraces a longer-term perspective.

About the Author

Marc H. Meyer is the Robert J. Shillman professor of Entrepreneurship at Northeastern University, as well as a Matthews Distinguished University Professor. Dr. Meyer is the founder of Northeastern University’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group in the College of Business Administration, where he has helped numerous students and alumni start their own companies. He is also director of High Tech MBA, a program focused on innovation within established corporations. He also helps direct Northeastern’s Center of Entrepreneurship Education, an interdisciplinary, experiential “system of entrepreneurship” where undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni learn the principles of entrepreneurial thinking and planning, and then launch new companies.

An internationally recognized scholar in the field of research and innovation, Dr. Meyer is the author of The Power of Product Platforms (written with Alvin P. Lehnerd, The Free Press, NY, 1997) and The Fast Path to Corporate Growth: Leveraging Knowledge and Technologies to New Market Applications, for which he received the Maurice Holland Award from the Industrial Research Institute (Oxford University Press, NY, 2007). Dr. Meyer is a graduate of Harvard College and holds his master’s and doctoral degrees from MIT.

Frederick G. Crane is an executive professor of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the College of Business at Northeastern University, Editor of the Journal of the Academy of Business Education, and co-founder of Ceilidh Insights LLC, an innovation management training, intellectual property consulting, and consumer insight company. He was formerly a professor of marketing and entrepreneurship at the University of New Hampshire and a chair and full professor at Dalhousie University. He currently teaches courses in entrepreneurship, innovation, and entrepreneurial marketing.

His academic research activities have resulted in more than 100 publications, including fifteen books. Additionally, he currently serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals. His current research stream intersects the domains of marketing, entrepreneurship, corporate venturing, and innovation, and he is conducting ongoing research on the psychology of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial education, entrepreneurial branding, and innovation readiness. Dr. Crane is also an award-winning educator who has received numerous honors for teaching excellence over the past twenty years.

Interesting Topics, Dull Delivery

I am a fan of fully colored pages. However, this book only has three colors: black, white, and baby blue. Professors have said that people learn better with a variety of colors. In my case, I agree. Also, the paper stock is different than what one would expect in a text (maybe the term is non-glossy?).

At any rate, the information is unparalleled compared to other books. Yes, there are the standard things like the phases of a business, but this book is the first that went into details about mining customers using a plethora of techniques, including data mining. My favorite tip was to observe the customer in his natural habitat. The books that I've read talked about taking surveys, but never accompanying or observing a customer during using a product. I'm a fan of the information, but dislike the delivery of it.

Learn how to distinguish yourself as a student

Because the authors have so carefully distilled their thoughts, this short book provides copious helpful information. The first chapter focuses on exercises and brief commentary that would be most useful before the start of an online class. The online learning toolkit advice in the second chapter is relevant to onsite as well as online study because to keep their edge in today's competitive academic environment it is essential that all students use their computers efficiently and creatively. The importance of selecting the right hardware, managing backups of your data, having contingency plans in case technology fails and setting up your work environment to accommodate webcam meetings should not be underestimated. Even if you have already taken care of these things reading this chapter will not be annoying because the writing is so concise. Dr Debbie Lackerstein is a lecturer in history in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of New South Wales, Canberra. Her main areas of research and teaching are the Second World War and Genocide Her next research project concerns different perspectives on the liberation of the German concentration and labour camps in the final weeks of the European war in 1945.
