About the Author
M. Shane Riza is a command pilot and a graduate of, and former instructor at, the U.S. Air Force Weapons School. A veteran of Operations Southern and Northern Watch, he commanded a fighter squadron during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He holds three master’s degrees, the most recent in national resource strategy from the National Defense University. Excellent.

Riza's examination of the ethics of unmanned robotic warfare is thorough, thoughtful, and extremely well-written. His use of ideas from minds as diverse as Kierkegaard, Kant, Ignatieff, Turing, Oppenheimer, Eisenhower, Camus, Orwell and Mao - to name a few - is perhaps unexpected from a man who made a career flying combat aircraft. Here is a real philosopher and academic who carries enormous credibility from his more than two decades as a military leader and has chosen to write about the timeliest of subjects. Highly recommended for anyone interested in foreign policy, military ethics, and the evolution of artificial intelligence in war.

Excellent discussion of war and ethics in the modern era of increasing robotic technology

A well-done, insightful look at the ethical dilemmas created by the use of increasing robotic technology in war. The author does an outstanding job integrating historical, philosophical and personal perspective and experience into a very readable work that asks us to carefully consider the way we wage war in the modern era. It’s a discussion that needs to happen, Riza is one of the few writing compellingly about this critical moral issue. I found a particular line in his conclusion especially poignant: “There was a time when American use of force was done out of a deep reluctance. It was, for a time, the national ethic on the resort to war, but reluctance seems to have slipped over the past decades. Our nation as a whole is now immune to the effects of war. We pay for it neither with blood nor treasure. It has made us more warlike without having to become more warriorlike.” (p. 176-177)
