About the Author
Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 1834 - 1892 Charles Spurgeon was born in Kelvedon, Essex in June 19, 1834. His father and his grandfather were both pastors and at the age of twenty, he became the pastor of the famous New Park Street Church in London. The congregation quickly grew out of the building and moved to Exeter Hall where he frequently preached to audiences of over 10,000 people. In 1861, the congregation moved to newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle, which was the largest indoor congregation ever reached with human voice up to that time in history. The Tabernacle was able to accommodate up to 6,000 people. The New Park Street and the Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpits, where Spurgeon preached, collected his sermons during his ministry, and they filled 63 volumes with 20-25 million words in them. His series stands as the largest set of books by a single author in the history of Christianity. His own personal library contained over 12,000 volumes. Spurgeon also became known to a wider audience with the publication of "Ploughman's Talk" in 1869 and "The Treasury of David." During Spurgeon's last years, he suffered severe physical pain from a gout attack. He was growing increasing ill and on January 31, 1892, Charles Haddon Spurgeon died.

One of the best daily devotionals I have ever read

I chanced upon this daily devotional in a local bookshop. I didn't know it was that good. I just bought it because I needed something extra for the morning before going off to work. As I began going through it, I realised how inspiring, motivating and crystal clear Spurgeon was able to explain some of the things about God. Along the way, it gave me many fresh revelations; things that I accepted previously as a Christian but never really understood why. As mentioned, many of the devotionals were inspiring and motivating. I really felt that God was speaking to me so lovingly through Spurgeon's devotionals. I'm not the only one who felt this way. Many of my friends and colleagues whom I shared the devotionals with felt the same way. Spurgeon's devotionals brought them so much closer to God and made some of them so much more passionate about God. This is definitely the first-choice daily devotional to go through first thing after we wake up every morning.

A Contemporary Version That Is Not

I am generally satisfied with this edition of Spurgeon's Morning and Evening. However, I bought it for a relatively new Christian, so I was drawn to that part of the title which reads, "A Contemporary version of a devotional classic." Not everyone can read Spurgeon's florid, Victorian prose with ease. I was quite disappointed then to find out that the text had not been altered, at least not in any significant way. It still had all the '-eths' and the thee's and thou's. Still a nice edition, but the 'Contemporary' in the title is misleading at best. Let the buyer beware!

Great material, but...

I think this book does a wonderful job taking readers through biological, cognitive, and relationship changes during adolescence. I was really impressed by the inclusion of the latest research modifying Piaget's theories. I agree with other users saying this book was repetitive, but sometimes the repetition was the topic as viewed from different perspectives (ex: Baumrind's authoritative parenting and how it applies to education-teaching, education-administrative policies, education-poverty-stricken neighborhoods, education-self esteem issues, education-hormonal changes, etc.).

I would have given it four stars, except that the author tends to loose objectivity when discussing hot-button topics such as homosexuality, abortion, and contraception. Otherwise, a very enjoyable book!

Worth it for this textbook

My professor required this text for Adolescent Psychology and drew almost directly from the sections for quizes/exams. The chapters were really thorough and explained concepts and terms in bold with mini glossary-style definitions when necessary. The photos with captions were supplemental to the chapters. It's nice to have a required book to read that is actually written in an interesting way and keeps you engaged in the reading.

Interesting read, for a textbook

There's little here to surprise anyone who taken an introductory course in adolescent thinking -- or, for that matter, raised a child through the teenage years -- but a good many examples that add texture to the generalizations of less detailed books. And it's written in an approachable style. For a textbook, it's an interesting read.

Marisara Stecher wurde 1986 in Böblingen geboren. Nach dem Abitur machte sie eine Ausbildung zur Sortimentsbuchhändlerin in Stuttgart. Anschließend studierte sie Buchwissenschaft und American Studies an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz mit einer Zwischenstation an der Syddansk Universitet, Odense, Dänemark. Zurzeit ist sie in einer Stuttgarter Verlagsgruppe im Bereich Fachbuch- und Zeitschriftenmarketing tätig.

John Brown has over 35 years of experience in the media and local government public relations. I thought that getting the spiral bound edition would be an awesome decision. I loved the idea of the tabs and the fact that it would lay open more nicely, but now I'm going to have to spend MORE money and get a different copy of this book. Since it says it's the second edition, it seemed logical that, aside from the binding, it would be identical to other second editions. This is not the case. It is not laid out similarly at all. After searching through it, in an attempt to keep up with my class discussions, I learned that it doesn't even contain the same content. It is utterly useless. Such a mistake.

I normally don't like to keep English textbooks but this one I will be saving. I reference to it for examples incase I forget what to do within my essay. It has a guide for MLA and a short section on APA. It isn't giant like my previous textbooks in the past. Its only the size of about a 500 page hardback reading book.

In her third collection, Olstein considers nature, faith, motherhood, and even the media with authority. “The anchorwoman’s hair / makes sense next to / the other anchorwoman’s hair,” a speaker calmly observes in “This Waking Life.” In “Blood, Bread, Spoons,” the queen of England is forgiven for eating the “people’s gold for breakfast” because “it’s the only thing / her stomach understands.” Deer dart in and out, leaving tracks that both comfort and concern those who find them. Companionship may be found in nature, Olstein suggests, but epiphanies are just as difficult to achieve there as within interpersonal relationships. In “Different Habitats Make for Good Neighbors,” a metaphysical take on Frost, Olstein offers a somewhat predictable scene of a nighttime forest, then stuns the reader with questions about faith that streak like comets through the poem. Olstein’s repetitions of images and words become echoes of a fierce conversation with the universe. These lines from one the collection’s strongest poems aptly describe the collection’s cumulative effect: “Hit something hard, hit something soft, / sit by a glowing window and watch / the lighted storm swim by.” --Carolyn Alessio

About the Author
Lisa Olstein’s debut collection of poetry Radio Crackling, Radio Gone (Copper Canyon, 2006) won the Hayden Carruth Award, and her second volume, Lost Alphabet (Copper Canyon, 2009), was named a “Best Poetry Book of the Year” by Library Journal. After receiving her BA from Barnard College, Olstein lived in Greece and studied at Harvard Divinity School before deciding to pursue an MFA at University of Massachusetts Amherst. She currently serves as Associate Director of MFA program for Poets and Writers at University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she cofounded the Juniper Initiative for Literary Arts & Action and is a contributing editor at jubilat. She lives in Amherst, Massachusetts.
