About the Author
Roger A. Kerin is the Harold C. Simmons Distinguished Professor of Marketing at the Edwin L. Cox School of Business, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Professor Kerin holds a B.A. (magna cum laude), M.B.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. His teaching and research interests lie in marketing planning and strategy, product management, financial aspects of marketing, and marketing research. Professor Kerin is a frequent participant in executive development programs and is also an active consultant on matters of marketing planning and strategy. Professor Kerin has published and authored several texts and many articles on marketing. He also serves on numerous journal editorial review boards and is currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Marketing Science.

William Rudelius holds the Endowed Chair in Global Marketing at the Graduate School of Business of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. He holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin and an M.B.A. in Marketing and Ph.D. in Applied Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Rudelius has co-authored other marketing textbooks. His articles have appeared in leading academic journals. During the past ten years, he has taught extensively in Europe; he serves on the board of directors for several business and not-for-profit organizations.

Steven W. Hartley is Professor of Marketing in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. He holds Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, M.B.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hartley was formerly the chair of the Department of Marketing at the University of Denver, and has taught at the University of Colorado, the University of Minnesota, and in several executive development programs. I really like the way that this text book is set up. It's the best. All books should be set up this way. It really helps with remembering key points. There are good review questions. The book doesn't just give you information but presents the information in a way that you're remember what you've read. It's a good study aide.

David Hepburn Milton is a professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Oregon, and author of The Politics of U.S. Labor: From the Great Depression to the New Deal. He and his wife, Nancy Dall Milton, co-authored The Wind Will Not Subside: Years in Revolutionary China 1964-1969, cited in the New York Times best books of the year list, 1976. He also co-edited the Random House China Reader: People's China.

A flawed, but interesting look at one aspect of the Civil War

The book is mistitled because Mr. Dudley (U.S. Consul in Liverpool, England) was not responsible for Union intelligence operations. Mr. Dudley's use of intelligence about Confederate activities in Great Britain to support his diplomatic efforts on behalf of the United States did not make him a "spymaster." And, the book itself does not present enough information to justify the bold claim that Mr. Dudley "may well be seen as the father of modern American intelligence operations on the international front" (Introduction at p. xiii). Anyone interested in intelligence operations during the Civil War can find more comprehensive books on the subject than this one: for example, Donald E. Markle, Spies and Spymasters of the Civil War: Revised and Expanded Edition (Hippocene Books, 2004); William G. Beymer, Scouts and Spies of the Civil War (University of Nebraska Press, 2003); Edwin C. Fishel, The Secret War for the Union: The Untold Story of Military Intelligence in the Civil War(Houghton Mifflin Co., 1996).

Despite its flaw in claiming more significance for Mr. Dudley's use of intelligence than is warranted by the contents of the book itself, this book is still worth looking at for anyone interested in Confederate efforts to obtain warships built by British shipyards, or the difficulties in U.S.-British foreign relations during the Civil War. But, the interested reader should not rely on this book as a definitive or only source for either of those two subjects. Another book worth looking at on the subject of Confederate efforts to get warships built by British shipyards is James T. DeKay, The Rebel Raiders: The Astonishing History of the Confederacy's Secret Navy (American Civil War S.) (Ballantine Books, 2002).

Book about Lincoln's spies in England during Civil War

This is a quick read but a must for Civil War buffs interested in what the feel was in England for the support of the Confederacy, and how the Union employed spies to diminish that outcome and to monitor the movement of British built ships bought by the Confederacy.

One Star - In Lieu of An Unavailable "Incomplete" Rating

Purchased in a bookstore situated not far from the wonderfully restored USS Constellation in a Baltimore harbor, I was quite looking forward to a memorable reading experience.

It was memorable, alright.

After the damage done by both the bizarre ending of his Acknowledgements & a disaster of an Introduction (which includes the stunning misspelling of Otto von Bismarck's name - overlooked by "editorial assistant" Ryan Masteller, "copyeditor" Joyce Bond, & "editor" Leigh Ann Berry - all three of whom also failed to notice the careless omission of the man's first name), my enthusiasm for reading LSP had been extinguished, completely.

Placed back on the shelf, it is now an on-the-cusp candidate for extinction (to be pulped). See the page margin notes for the rest of what sank the Introduction - which might have been sufficient to sink the Constellation.

Post Note (12/16/12): If I thought Stackpole's editing of the introduction to "Lincoln's Spymaster" was a mess, it was nothing compared to what the publisher shipped out in the form of "In The Fire of The Eastern Front, The Experience of a Dutch Waffen-SS Volunteer, 1941-45," by Frederick Verton (Stackpole Books 2003; see review).

This first biography of Hurlbut chronicles the early life and the Civil War career of one of Abraham Lincoln's foremost military appointments. Through exhaustive research of primary and secondary sources, author Jeffrey N. Lash identifies and evaluates the successes and failures of Hurlbut's generalship and combat leadership, both as a field commander in Missouri in 1861 and as a division commander at the Battles of Shiloh and Hatchie Bridge in 1862. Featuring new and original research material and rare photographs of Hurlbut, Lash addresses why Hurlbut succeeded for so long and then finally failed as a military politician. He provides motives for Hurlbut's corrupt official conduct as a post commander in occupied Memphis and New Orleans from 1863 to 1865 and explains his highly erratic and unstable personal behavior, particularly in view of his habitually heavy drinking. Civil War scholars and military historians will find this a welcome addition to the literature of the War, Reconstruction, and postwar diplomacy.

Excellent biography of not so hot general/politician

Stephen A. Hurlbut was a controversial figure throughout his whole life. He seemed incapable of giving anything more than mixed results in all his endeavors. Born in South Carolina, he practiced law in Illinois beginning in 1845. He served as a Whig in the state legislature just prior to the Civil War, and then was appointed brigadier general of volunteers in 1861. He served in northern Missouri for a time, but had little understanding of guerilla warfare. He did much better at Shiloh defending the Union left. He also commanded well at Corinth and Meridian, but failed to seize the initiative after the Confederates were defeated at Hatchie's Bridge. Although he was loyal and dutiful, he was not a strong leader of men. He was also a heavy drinker, which got him into hot water. He was extremely harsh toward southern sympathizers, blacks, and Jews, and it was a mistake making him commander of the Department of the Gulf in September 1864: he was charged with corruption and was antagonistic toward the Louisiana authorities. His drunkenness was also becoming a major handicap. After the war he became a Republican leader in Illinois and helped organize the GAR. He was a minister to Colombia, 1869-72, and then minister to Peru during the Peru-Chile War, where he drunken behavior was an embarrassment to the US. He died in Lima in 1882. Jeffrey Lash's account of Hurlbut's life is informative and well written and pulls no punches. Except for having the ability to organize for his political causes, this southerner with a Yankee heritage was only mildly competent in as well as out of uniform. Lash's efficient and well-fitted biography is better than Hurlbut probably deserves. Recommended.

Perhaps Omits Some Inconvenient Truths.

Although certainly giving a good general review of this "General", one can't help feel the author lets his bias creep into the details he relates, else, how could he limit his comments about the rather long and detailed report Hurlbut wrote to Lincoln regarding the motives of the secessionists following his trip South prior to the election to one sentence about the desire for an independent nation with expectations of increased trade and prosperity? Certainly, soon thereafter, others in the North, including writers in the Philadelphia Press and Boston Transcript, whether knowledgeable of his report or not, seemed to take these same concerns quite seriously.

About the Author

Paul McVeigh was a professional footballer for 16 years playing for clubs Tottenham Hotspur, Luton Town, Burnley and Norwich City. Making more than 300 appearances, he scored 43 goals and was a key member of two Championship winning teams, rising to the pinnacle of English football - the Premier League. He also represented Northern Ireland at senior level on 20 occasions.

Since retiring from football, Paul has worked extensively with youngsters in football academies, established himself as a sports presenter in the national media, and delivered a variety of well-received keynote speeches, seminars and workshops.

Lots of Insight

The Stupid Footballer is Dead by Paul McVeigh is a unique title. It dives into a new topic, the psychology surrounding the beautiful game.

The book suggests that the game has changed and the footballer has changed with it. McVeigh breaks this argument down, showing how talent is just not enough and that the mental side of the game is paramount.

The best part of the book is McVeigh's discussion of role models, players who have had great success because of their mental awareness. Some of the names (Paul Scholes, Fernando Torres, Lionel Messi) were not surprising, but others (Robert Green, Scott Parker, Grant Holt) may not have come to mind instantly. It is interesting to see how different players approach the game and how their attributes add up to a "winner's psychology".

The book is great for football fans who want to get in the head of professional footballers. Think of it as a sneak peak into the mind of an elite player. McVeigh had an impressive career of 16 years, playing for heavyweights like Tottenham, Luton, and Norwich. He also represented Northern Ireland on the international level.

I think the book could be an invaluable tool for players of all ages. It gives them the tools they need to reach the next level, to take their game up a notch.

Guidance for Young Players

This book is aimed at younger players and provides great guidance and examples. Unfortunately, I purchased the book thinking it was more of a memoir (I'm a Norwich City fan). I was hoping for more insight into behind the scenes stories. I admire Paul McVeigh's honesty in the book and would recommend it to anyone involved with youth development.

Taking an architectural and territorial perspective on this issue, it looks specifically at how retail and consumption spaces have changed and territorialised urban life in different ways. It then develops a methodology and a set of concepts to describe and understand the role of architecture in these territorial transformations.
