Each chapter provides a different example of the manifold ways in which the physical place of architecture is curated by the architecture in our "mental" space: our imaginary toolbox when we think of a place and look at a photograph, or visit a site and describe it later or send a postcard.

By connecting architecture with other disciplines such as geography, visual culture, sociology, and urban studies, as well as the fine and performing arts, this book puts forward the idea that a conversation about architecture is not exclusively about formal, isolated buildings, but instead must be deepened and broadened as spatialized visualizations and experiences of place.

Exploring the complex relationship between western monasticism and lay society in east central Europe across a broad chronological timeframe, this collection provides a re-examination of the level and nature of interaction between members of religious orders and the communities around them. That the studies in this collection are all located in east central Europe - Transylvania, Hungary, Austria, and Bohemia- fulfils a second key aim of the volume: the examination of clerical and lay piety in a region of Europe almost entirely ignored by western scholarship.

As such the volume provides an important addition to current scholarship, showcasing fresh research on a subject and region on which little has been published in English. The volume further contributes to the reintegration of eastern and western European history, expanding the existing parameters of scholarly discourse into late medieval and early modern religious practice and piety.

Tal y como yo siempre me lo preguntaba cuando era muy joven. A alguno de nosotros en las americas nos vendieron los Estados Unidos de America como un cielo y el resto de las americas como una america con menos valor en todos sus sentidos. Me tomo tiempo conocer al escritor Eduardo Galeano pero le doy gracias a la vida por haberme topado con alguien que ha puesto en papel lo que yo siempre me sospechaba: Que America en el continente y que todos valemos y valemos mucho!

Un libro para reflexionar

Puede que no sea el mejor libro de Eduardo Galeano, cierto que es difícil superar `Las venas abiertas de América Latina' o `Patas arriba'. Aun así, creo que no has entendido bien la intención del libro, se trata de un almanaque, una propuesta de efemérides y celebraciones lejos de las que se dan en las grandes instituciones. ¿No estás cansada de escuchar que tal fecha es, por ejemplo, el "Día de la lactancia materna" y todos los noticieros se llenan con información sensacionalista? Pues Galeano te recuerda lo poco que hacemos por enfrentarnos el problema y te recuerda los problemas que, por ejemplo, tienen las madres en China.

¿No es mejor recordar a grandes líderes históricos, a intelectuales que cambiaron nuestra forma de pensar o reivindicar nuestros derechos que celebrar días demagogos por causas que no intentamos solucionar? Por cierto, como recuerda el escritor uruguayo en Los hijos de los días: ¿Sabías que hasta 1990 la homosexualidad fue considera una enfermedad mental según la Organización Mundial para la Salud? Bueno, pues desde hace unos años la ONU ha declarado el 16 de noviembre "Día Mundial de la Tolerancia", ¿acaso los homosexuales necesitan un día para ganarse "tolerancia", es decir, respeto? ¿No deberían ser todos los días El Día de la Tolerancia? Esa es la reivindicación de Galeano en su libro y te lo muestra a su manera: pequeños relatos, uno por día para enfrentarse a la hipocresía dominante y recordar los grandes hitos históricos que nos permiten evolucionar.

Astrology and Beyond

I love astrology but have always been frustrated that the literature on astrology never quite makles it to that place where my deeper interest in all things spiritual takes me. This book does. It's the first and only perspective (except for a few smippets from Gurdjieff) that does. Osho puts predictive astrology in it's place. He honours psychological astrology - and then take the step beyond it that others don't - into the astrology of essence. He offers a perspective that involves being humbled by the universe and having one's ego stopped in its tracks. He points at the ruins of a science that has been hijacked by superficiality and suggests ways that it could regain it's lost depths. As an Astrologer and Astrology Columnist who has been at it for a very long time, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to go into new territory, territory that gives Astrology back some of the dignity it has lost over the centuries. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy! Sudhir

Finally the truth about astrology

I've never been fan of astrology mainly by the amount of misinformation that we have about it. Osho made me understand it in greater depth (far from stupid horoscopes in newspapers) a complete and ancient science that affects us in a manner that I even imagined and that can help me to better understand my role in the universe. Definitely a book that satisfies and helps both: skeptics and experienced astrologers. It has given me a desire to continue investigating!

Osho was the last real Mystic we've had here so all his books and discourses are real valuable in actually allowing us to expand our awareness. This particular book takes a look at what the nature of our cosmic connection really is. And if you can get this, it really clues you in to things on a whole other level. Recommend this book even if you've taken in other Osho works because this is a totally different angle Osho is hitting your perspective with.

Hell’s Kitchen is among Manhattan’s most storied and studied
neighborhoods. A working-class district situated next to the West
Side’s middle- and upper-class residential districts, it has long attracted
the focus of artists and urban planners, writers and reformers.
Now, Joseph Varga takes us on a tour of Hell’s Kitchen
with an eye toward what we usually take for granted: space, and,
particularly, how urban spaces are produced, controlled, and contested
by different class and political forces.
Varga examines events and locations in a crucial period in the
formation of the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, the Progressive Era,
and describes how reformers sought to shape the behavior and experiences
of its inhabitants by manipulating the built environment.
But those inhabitants had plans of their own, and thus ensued
a struggle over the very spaces—public and private, commercial
and personal—in which they lived. Varga insightfully considers the
interactions between human actors, the built environment, and
the natural landscape, and suggests how the production of and
struggle over space influence what we think and how we live. In
the process, he raises incisive questions about the meaning of
community, citizenship, and democracy itself.

About the Author
Joseph Varga is Assistant Professor of Labor Studies at Indiana University. Before receiving his doctorate from the New School for Social Research, Varga was a truck driver, forklift operator, and service worker, among other things. He is a long-time labor activist and former Teamster shop steward, and has worked for the IBEW and New York State Working Families Party.
