They provide an alternative story of an incipient transition towards modernity, a 'Nordic model' in which radical change takes place within an apparent continuity of the established order. The long-term products of the processes of change that began in the Age of Revolution were some of the most progressive and stable political systems in the modern world.

At the same time, the Scandinavian countries provide a number of instances which are directly relevant to comparisons particularly within the northwest European cultural area. Presenting the latest research on political culture in Scandinavia, this volume with twenty-seven contributions focuses on four key aspects: the crisis of monarchy; the transformation in political debate; the emerging influence of commercial interest in politics; and the shifting boundaries of political participation. Each section is preceded by an introduction that draws out the main themes of the chapters and how they contribute to the broader themes of the volume and to overall European history. Generously illustrated throughout, this book will introduce non-Scandinavian readers to developments in the Nordic countries during the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries and both complement and challenge research into the political cultures of Europe and America.

Raised abroad by Palestinian parents, Joudah returned to his native Texas to practice medicine and compose poetry. When Louise Glück selected his debut, The Earth in the Attic (2008), for the Yale Younger Poets Prize, she recognized its subjects as “characterized by crisis and transience” and alluded to Joudah’s desire to suture the disjointed experience of exile. Here Joudah continues to examine the role his dual vocations play in his own sense of ancestral displacement, and he moves as easily from a “Moorish synagogue in Prague” to Gaza’s colonial groves, rows of “eucalyptus trees / The British had planted.” With anatomical precision, Joudah illustrates scenes that are at once uncanny and contemporary, be it a Bedouin woman’s lavender mourning veil, the chrome doors to an alchemist’s home, or the mysterious speaker in “Smoke,” who exits abruptly and claims to have “scripts to write and scrolls to find,” a testament to the duties of attending physician and displaced poet alike. In both roles, Joudah has records to keep and history to revisit, and does so beautifully. --Diego Báez

Fady Joudah: Fady Joudah is a poet, translator, and emergency room physician. Born in Austin, Texas, and the son of Palestinian refugees, he was raised in Libya and Saudi Arabia. Joudah received his medical training from the Medical College of Georgia and University of Texas, and has traveled the world with Doctors Without Borders, providing medical assistance to those harmed by violence and catastrophe. His first book, "The Earth in the Attic, " won the 2007 Yale Series of Younger Poets competition, judged by Louise Gluck. In his introduction to this volume, editor Joseph Gelfer references the emerging literature in global masculinity, including Connell (1998), Pease and Pringle (2001), and Blazina and Shen-Miller’s (2011) International Psychology of Men. Given my lack of familiarity with this area, I approached Masculinities in a Global Era from the standpoint of one who is not a global masculinities scholar and is needier of an introduction than of an advanced course. With that perspective in mind, I don’t think it is unfair to say that this volume can be considered as “Global Masculinities II.” That is, most of the chapters seem to require the reader to have some degree of familiarity with scholarship in this field, as well as a deeper understanding of geography, international conflicts, and global political developments than most of us Americans have (sadly)...As a psychologist, I must add that this is quite unlike other multicultural works that I have encountered. It is a challenging and thought-provoking collection of loosely connected writings that will likely inspire reflection and revision of ideas. However, a reader will not complete this volume having acquired easily digestible information about clinical application or intervention principles...Masculinities in a Global Era is, however, likely to stimulate needed challenges to many entrenched ideas about gender, manhood, and masculinity. I would recommend it to folks in academia, qualitative researchers, and any thinking person wishing to understand the
critical relevance of the life experiences of men that have been underrecognized and underappreciated in most all previous men’s studies scholarship."

A "Classic" for any Cook's library

I have a lot of cookbooks and do not make many of the same dishes twice. This cookbook has a lot of dishes I would repeat. Most of the ingredients are not specialty, but ones you would have onstock. Almost all the recipes I have tried are good. A friend gave me the roll recipe and I made them for Easter 2009. This the recipe I have been looking for! Everyone at the table raved. When I work with yeast, I always hold my breathe. I found the pictures to be really reassuring. I am going to buy this cookbook.

I was very impressed by the home style food served at this restaurant. When I was in SLC I bought the bakery book and loved it so much I looked on line to see if I could find another from the Lion House. I did and this one is good too. I highly recommend them both.

One of the better books of the series, this one lays a lot of the track for everything worthwhile that comes after. The history of Vought reads like black comedy mockery of the most looney of conspiracy theorists, yet manages to keep an element of menace. This is what Ennis can do when all cylinders and every synapse is firing.

In this volume, the theme of urban migration is explored through a series of historical contexts, journeying from sixteenth-century Antwerp, Ulm, Lille and Valenciennes, through seventeenth-century Berlin, Milan and Rome, to eighteenth-century Strasbourg, Trieste, Paris and London. Each chapter demonstrates how the presence of diverse and often temporary groups of migrants was a core feature of everyday urban life, which left important marks on the demographic, economic, social, political, and cultural characteristics of individual cities. The collection focuses on the interventions by urban authorities and institutions in a wide-ranging set of domains, as they sought to stimulate, channel and control the newcomers' movements and activities within the cities and across the cities' borders.

While striving for a broad geographical and chronological coverage in a comparative perspective, the volume aims to enhance our insight into the different factors that shaped urban migration policies in different European settings west of the Elbe. By laying bare the complex interactions of actors, interests, conflicts, and negotiations involved in the regulation of migration, the case studies shed light on the interrelations between burghership, guilds, relief arrangements, and police in the incorporation of newcomers and in shaping the shifting boundaries between wanted and unwanted migrants. By relating to a common analytical framework, presented in the introductory chapter, they engage in a comparative discussion that allows for the formulation of general insights and the identification of long term transformations that transcend the time and place specificities of the case studies in question. The introduction and final chapters connect insights derived from the individual case-study chapters to present wide ranging conclusions that resonate with both historical and present-day debates on migration.

About the Author
Mary graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a BA in Psychology. She lives in Manchester, Iowa, with three of her eight children. Mary currently writes a weekly couponing column for the Dubuque Telegraph Herald, where she is touted as the Tri-State Area's Coupon Queen. She holds couponing and writing workshops for NICC and Hawkeye, area community colleges, writing workshops at the River Lights bookstore in Dubuque and does public speaking for women's groups, libraries and writing conferences. A Must Read Book

Every household that wants to save on the grocery bill should have a copy. This book is made for the "kindergarten" couponer through the "college graduate" couponer. The basic fundamentals of couponing are explained so well. Mary also stresses that honesty and discretion must always be used. I really appreciated that. I am sure that everybody will learn something new from Coupon Crazy. I would rate this 5 plus.

A Must Read For A True Couponer

I have been couponing for about 45 or so years. I had never gotten into the science of couponing and this book did a great job filling me in . If you are buying this book to just find out how to save better this isn't the book for you . You must read the entire title of the book beyond "Coupon Crazy". The Science,The Savings and the Stories behind America's Extreme Obsession.
Once you read the entire title, then you know what type of book and you will get your fill of all the information you might have wanted to know about when coupons first came out what happened to the green/blue chip stamp and more.
Great book and would recommend it to every who remembers the "Blue Light Special".

About the Author

Dr. Kenneth E. Clow is a professor of Marketing in the College of Business Administration at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Previously, he served as the Dean for the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and as the MBA Director at Pittsburg State University. He obtained his PhD from the University of Arkansas in 1992. Dr. Clow has published over 220 articles in academic journals and proceedings and has written a number of books, including Integrated Advertising, Promotions, and Marketing Communications, 6th edition, Essentials of Marketing, 4th edition, Sports Marketing, and Marketing Management. His articles appear in journals such as Journal of Business Research, The Journal of Marketing Management, the Journal of Services Marketing, the Journal of Contemporary Business Issues, the Journal of Restaurant and Foodservices Marketing, Journal of Professional Services Marketing, Services Marketing Quarterly and The Journal of Hospitality and Leisure Marketing.

Dr. Karen E. James is a professor of Marketing and Chair of the Department of Management and Marketing at Louisiana State University Shreveport, where she holds the Joe and Abby Averett Professorship in Business. Dr. James earned both her DBA (1994) and MBA (1987) degrees from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She also received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Purdue University in Mass Communication after completing a double major in Public Relations and Radio and Television Production. Dr. James has extensive consulting experience, including health care marketing and focus group moderation consulting. She has created numerous educational supplements for various publishers and teaches marketing research on a regular basis. Her writings have been published in the Business Communication Quarterly, The Journal of Marketing Management, Services Marketing Quarterly, the Higher Education Management and Policy Journal, and the Journal of Education for Business and Marketing Management, among others.
