An enjoyable, common-language exploration on the Philosophy of Music. From Beethoven to the Beatles, Jaco Pastorius to Ravi Shankar, Theodore Gracyk explores how and why music speaks to us.

This book is written for general audiences and skillfully explores the human phenomenon that is Music. An enjoyable read with clear examples and fascinating perspectives.

Not a meal on its subject.

As an introduction for the non-specialist or layperson, I find that On Music is of such quality as to make me think the book must be highly interesting large majority of the lay reader. But, as even the author states, this book is not a general, or over-all, introduction to it's subject. Rather, it introduces only a small 'slice' of the 'pie' which is the philosophy of music. For me, personally, this particular 'slice' is all-but-worthless, so that I wish that the title of the book had been specific to that effect, or, that a subtitle specifying that 'slice' had been included.

So, my own story in regard to this book is this: With a haste born of hunger-and-business, I grabbed up this small and inexpensive book, with its general title on a subject of my intense interest to me, expecting it to be a general introduction to its subject. I basically regret having bought it. By no means is it philosophical junk food. But, its title 'smelled' far better to me than I find that, for me, it 'tastes'.

So, if you are thinking that you might like this book, there may be a fair chance that you find it to be a 'dish' that tastes dry and flavorless to you. You might do better by first logging in to Amazon and then reading a few random pages.

About the Author
Kathleen M. Galotti holds a B.A. in psychology and economics from Wellesley College, as well as an M.A. and a Ph.D. in psychology and an M.S.E. in computer and information sciences from the University of Pennsylvania. At Carleton College she holds the title Professor and Director of Cognitive Science, an interdisciplinary program, which she helped establish in 1989. She also is a former department chair of Psychology. She teaches courses in cognitive and developmental psychology and cognitive science, and has also taught courses in statistics and introductory psychology. Dr. Galotti is the author or coauthor of dozens of peer-reviewed studies in cognitive and developmental psychology. Her research centers on the development of reasoning and decision-making skills from the preschool period through adulthood and on the styles with which adolescents and adults plan for the future, make important life commitments, and learn new information. Her research has been funded through the National Science Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. She is the author of Making Decisions That Matter: How People Face Important Life Choices (Erlbaum, 2002), as well as a textbook, Cognitive Development: Infancy Through Adolescence (SAGE, 2011).

Ebook is horrible. It doesn't let you copy any of the text in case you want to quote the text in a paper. Doesn't allow any right clicks which includes using search. I could go on all day about the problems this ebook has, but basically I'm just saying DO NOT RENT OR BUY THIS EBOOK.

If you are thinking about renting a this book from amazon, I strongly advise against it. I rented a hard book copy of this book from amazon as well. It was falling apart. The binding was torn. The pages were torn and every page had tons of writing all over it. Basically the book was unusable. If this is the type of book you would like then rent it from amazon.

It emphasizes the postcolonial perspective in order to raise critical consciousness about the complexities of intercultural communication in a globalizing world, situating cosmopolitanism—the notion of global citizenship—as a multilayered lens for research. Cosmopolitanism as a theoretical repertoire provides nuanced descriptions of what it means to be and communicate as a global citizen, how to critically study interconnectedness within and across cultures, and how to embrace differences without glossing over them. Moving intercultural communication studies towards the global in complex and nuanced ways, this book highlights crucial links between globalization, transnationalism, postcolonialism, cosmopolitanism, social injustice and intercultural communication, and will help in the creation of classroom spaces devoted to exploring these links. It also engages the links between theory and praxis in order to move towards intercultural communication pedagogy and research that simultaneously celebrates and interrogates issues of cultural difference with the aim of creating continuity rather than chasms. In sum, this book orients intercultural communication scholarship firmly towards the critical and postcolonial, while still allowing the incorporation of traditional intercultural communication concepts, thereby preparing students, scholars, educators and interculturalists to communicate ethically in a world that is simultaneously global and local.

A worthy addition to my Mindfulness Library

At this time I have not read the entire book, but so far the material seems sound and the book seems to constitute a fairly good introduction to MBCT.

The author writes in an easy to read style, and the material does not presuppose you are a counseling psychology graduate student or therapist, so the book is a nice read for both professional and non-professional. Could be used in a class or seminar dealing with Mindfulness, CBT or Dialectical BT. Can also be read in conjunction with other materials for courses in Transpersonal or Humanistic-Existential Psychology. Not a bad read for any student of therapist who does not have a background in CBT and wants to add this dimension to your approach.

Very congruent with therapies which emphasize staying in the moment or in the now whenever possible ...

For those who do not have such experience a decent into to the notion of living or doing therapy "in the moment" or "in the now". For me, I find the book a worthy addition to my mindfulness library ...

I just love this, I bought the Audible version and listened ...

I just love this, I bought the Audible version and listened on my phone. The narrator sounds like the narrator in the Winnie the Pooh series. The exercises sound so simple, but when you put them into practice, you will notice a positive change in the way you see things almost right away. I'm going to gift this book, and I'm planning to listen again. It's like a warm cup of tea, I would recommend this book to anyone!

Decent book, I liked a different one better though

This is a decent book. You have to follow the exercises to get the benefits though. I personally liked The Mindful Way Through Depression better. It covers similar material, and has more explanation of the theory behind mindfulness. I'm a geeky person though; others who are just trying to learn the techniques and care little for explanations may may well prefer the MCBT for Dummies book.

The volume is focussed on the paradox of motherhood in the European Middle Ages: to be a mother is at once to hold great power, and by the same token to be acutely vulnerable. The essays look to analyse the powers and the dangers of motherhood within the warp and weft of social history, beginning with the premise that religious discourse or practice served as a medium in which mothers (and others) could assess their situation, defend claims, and make accusations. Within this frame, three main themes emerge: survival, agency, and institutionalization. The volume spans the length and breadth of the Middle Ages, from late Roman North Africa through ninth-century Byzantium to late medieval Somerset, drawing in a range of types of historian, including textual scholars, literary critics, students of religion and economic historians. The unity of the volume arises from the very diversity of approaches within it, all addressed to the central topic.
