Over the last thirty years, the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies has grown from a small group of disaffected conservative law students into an organization with extraordinary influence over American law and politics. During the Bush years, young Federalist Society lawyers dominated the legal staffs of the Justice Department and other important government agencies.

The Society has lawyer chapters in every major city in the United States and student chapters in every accredited law school. Its membership includes economic conservatives, social conservatives, Christian conservatives, and libertarians, who differ with each other on significant issues, but who cooperate in advancing a broad conservative agenda.

About the Author
Michael Avery is a Professor of Law at Suffolk University Law School where he teaches constitutional law and evidence, is a former president of the National Lawyers Guild. From 1970 to 1998, he was in private practice, specializing in plaintiffs' civil rights litigation and criminal defense.

Danielle McLaughlin is a litigation associate in the Boston officers of Nixon Peabody LLP, where her practice focuses on commerical litigation and government investigations.  She clerked for the honorable William Young in the Federal District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and was the Editor-in-Chief of Suffolk University Law School's Journal of High Technology.

Fascinating read

I found this a fascinating read. As someone who knows relatively little about the politics that inform our legal system, I was blown away by the extent to which a single group's interests are represented in the Supreme Court. The authors' treatment of this political subject is fair and unbiased. The Federalist Society seems to me an important work in exposing the complex and secretive network of conservative power in the United States.

Descent into American Conservatism

THE FEDERALIST SOCIETY: HOW CONSERVATIVES TOOK BACK THE LAW FROM LIBERALS by Michael Avery and Danielle McLaughlin explores how and why the Federalist Society was founded, developed and funded. Professor Avery teaches at Suffolk University Law School and has been a civil rights attorney and former president of the National Lawyers Guild. Ms. McLaughlin is a graduate of Suffolk University Law School and is currently a litigation associate at Nixon Peabody in Boston.

With chapters on every law school campus, the Federalist Society is churning out a stream of disciplined lawyers who will dismantle regulation and consequently dismember government from within and without. It's a sobering book, acutely but readably written. This is an important read for anyone interested in politics, law and the future of the American democratic experiment. Its sharp and exacting critique of progressive philanthropy should instigate serious reconsideration of how liberal funders operate, especially in the areas of racial, social, gender, consumer, criminal and environmental justice.

In researching the funding that allowed the Federalist Society to grow so effectively, the authors note that most of its foundation support was in the form of unrestricted rather than program grants. Its five largest funders, which include the Olin Foundation and foundations operated by the Koch brothers, contributed $17.3 million in grants to the Federalist Society, of which $11.6 million was unrestricted. Among liberal funders there is a preference for program grants with specific quantifiable short term and long term goals that must be reached in order to qualify for the next year's funding. Many liberal foundations do not offer grants for more than a year, or three at the most. They want their name and logo associated with innovation. Not so for the patient philanthropy of the conservative far right. Conservatives not only give, but they trust the organizations' staffs to use the money wisely. And as anyone who has seen the conservative takeover of the courts in the last thirty years knows, that patience has paid off.

Professor Avery and Ms. McLaughlin demonstrate the Federalist Society's efficacy by tracing the decisions issued by the U.S. Supreme Court, which now has four justices--Chief Justice John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito, and Clarence Thomas--who are in ideological agreement with the Society. They are frequent speakers there, too. The book is divided into subject matter chapters: regulation of private property with a focus on the takings and compensation clauses; access to justice seen through a lens of regulation of private property; race and gender discrimination; personal sexual autonomy; and American exceptionalism and international law. In each of these chapters, the role of the Federalist Society in influencing the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court is documented, the systematic and often disingenuous reasoning of judicial decisions explained, and the somewhat steady dissolution of precedent and invalidation of federal legislation tracked. America is shedding its New Deal and Great Society heritage; American jurisprudence is no longer the bulwark for emerging democracies to emulate.

Like most persuasive narratives, where the story begins signifies its point. For Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, affirmative action is "patronizing indulgence," and consistent with Federalist Society analysis, racial resentment somehow began with affirmative action. Under whose history did affirmative action and its "badge of inferiority" begin with race as one factor of many in a holistic admissions review? Colorblindness in the Federalist Society sense ignores the legacy of slavery as it produced the privilege of whiteness, and all that it provides: access to higher quality public schools, better housing in safer neighborhoods that accelerate home equity growth, cleaner air and water, less crime, and the networks that offer jobs and amplify political voice. Within the Federalist Society these privileges are not the result of actionable racial discrimination. Racial inequality, according to conservatives, results from a cultural breakdown within the African American community that breeds crime and an inability to compete with whites. Since conservatives do not define racial discrimination as anything other than intentional, obstacles to opportunity like implicit bias and institutional racism are not even considered.

Avery and McLaughlin follow the placement of prominent members of the Federalist Society first into the Reagan administration and trace their ascendency as they go from government, no matter which party is in control of the White House and Congress, to advocacy groups, back into government and for too many, into the federal judiciary. The listing of Federalist Society members and its allies is chilling. Progressives have a lot to learn about how the Federalist Society has operated: opening chapters at every law school, providing budgets to lure hungry students with fancy food to hear conservative speakers, mentoring exceptional students into judicial clerkships and prized positions in government, and finally, as we have seen with Chief Justice Roberts and Associate Justice Alito, onto the Supreme Court. The American Constitutional Society of Law and Policy (ACS) began as an antidote to the Federal Society after the 2000 presidential election, yet still does not have the reach in mentoring the next generation of judges and legislators or the efficacy the Federalist Society has achieved. I recommend this book because its tone is precise, thoughtful and fearless, prompting a re-evaluation of how we teach law, how we think about the role of government and how we fund social justice before it's too late for American democracy.

Ultimately Unsatisfying for Social Science Minded Readers

For a generalist audience, this book will probably serve as a fine introduction to the Federalist Society and the role it's played in shaping constitutional discourse and law. As a Political Scientist who has published several articles on the Federalist Society and the Conservative Legal Movement and is currently finishing up a book manuscript on the same topic (Google "Amanda Hollis-Brusky"), however, I found this book on the whole very unsatisfying. It synthesizes work from other social scientists on the Federalist Society (including my own) but presents no original research, interview data, or academic perspective on this important organization. As Jeffrey Rosen recently wrote in a review for the New York Times, ""The Federalist Society" reads like a collection of law review articles and contains no original interviews with the 100 conservative lawyers the authors identify in their appendix as key "Federalist Society Members and Allies."" (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/12/books/review/the-federalist-society-by-michael-avery-and-danielle-mclaughlin.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0). Perhaps most importantly, the authors provide no explanation for how they generated their list of "100 Friends or Allies" of the Federalist Society. Many of the individuals they identify, for example, have never presented at Federalist Society National Conferences and, to my knowledge and understanding based on interviews with nearly 40 key Federalist Society members, are not actually serious players in the Federalist Society network at all. So, in the end, the book has a very journalistic feel to it - instead of systematically presenting their research design and methodology, the authors link anyone who is "conservative" and has done "conservative things" in the law to the Federalist Society network in order to show the organization's "influence."

Pseudo-Science Masquerades as Real Science

This book is actually one of the most often-cited books purporting to establish a link between viewing violent television and aggressive behavior. This link is studied in several nations, from the United States to Poland to Israel. As a scientific book, one should not expect this book to be a page-turner. But one would hope that it would have scientific merit.

However, it does not. Although this book purports to support a link between violent television and aggression across nations, a close look at the results reveals that this is not true. Indeed, in multiple regression conducted, only among American girls, Polish boys and Israeli city children (but not Israeli children living on a kibbutz) was any link (a weak one) found. Among children in the majority of other nations, including American boys and Polish girls, no link was found. Furthermore no statistical adjustment was made for multiple analyses, raising the likelihood that even the results reported were "capitalizing on chance." Other methodological and reporting flaws make this book, although influencial, a poor example of science driven by a pre-existing agenda.

About the Author
Kent Crockett is a graduate of Texas A&M University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is currently senior pastor of Fellowship Church in High Springs, Florida. For 17 years, he was the pastor of Cornerstone Church in Garden City, Kansas. He is the author of 3 books: "The 911 Handbook, Making Today Count for Eternity, " and "I Once Was Blind but Now I Squint", and has been published in several Christian magazines. Kent is a featured radio guest and has appeared on At Home Live with Chuck & Jenni and other shows. He and his wife Cindy live near Gainesville, Florida.

A terrific, must-read book!!

Today we live in a world and a country that presents us with unlimited opportunity to being captured by all manners of mental, emotional and spiritual problems. This book could be the most powerful one Kent has ever written in addressing the 20 issues that often hold us captive and showing us the path to freedom and blessing. He is gifted with a style of writing that makes it easy for anyone to examine themselves honestly and identify the giants that are holding them back from the life they really want to live. Then Kent reveals how to get to get there as well!

Terrific resource

Kent's book here is a wonderful resource. Easy read, with his comfortable, soulful writing style, it's like having a personal conversation with a trusted mentor.
Dependent upon your age, you WILL see these Giants prowling around, so why not prepare, research, and give intentional time to each so you won't be either surprised or caught off guard? My copy has my scratch marks, notes in the margins, and underlined/highlighted notations throughout - making it an easy reference. So, I'm now on a campaign of buying copies as gifts, suggestions, and encouragement. And the study guide and lesson template at the end elevates it as an awesome group activity - Sunday school class, Christian businessmen groups, home groups, etc.
Personally, it caused me to reflect, and revisit my own lifetime experiences with each and every Giant - a healthy exercise and opportunity to galvanize, review and re-appreciate, the sovereignty of God and His goodness to each of us individually..., even me.
I HIGHLY recommend it as a personal examination, a timeless reference, and even a self-help asset.
You will not be disappointed.
I paced myself to read only 1 chapter a day to allow time for focused, respectful, attention to each Giant. After all, how many Giants can one manage in a day, right?

Answering life's problems from a biblical perspective

Kent Crockett has written an easy to read, conversational book that provides solid, biblical based answers to life's problems. Each of the book's 20 chapters deals with a "Giant" such as Fear, Doubt, Temptation, Unforgiveness, Death and other of life's problems and gives solid biblical based illustrations of God's plan for handling these obstacles. The author has an easy to read style that intersperses personal stories and experiences he has observed over his long career as a pastor along with biblical references that accurately pinpoint how God wants us to hurdle these problems. The book includes a discussion guide for small group bible study the reader will find helpful in leading discussion of these pertinent topics. Your eyes will be opened by the author's insight into hidden gems of biblical insight such as: Why did God put the forbidden tree in the middle of the garden?
Pastor Crockett has a tender heart for pastoral care of his flock and it's brillantly evident in his latest book.

Through one man's career, Colt Terry, Green Beret portrays the birth and development of America's most elite fighting unit. The 10th Special Forces Group was the first of the Green Beret units. Its five hundred men, all Airborne and mostly Rangers, received extensive training in everything from specialized weapons to uncommon languages. Their primary mission was to train and lead indigenous guerrillas operating in enemy territory. Second Lieutenant Colt Terry, who had joined the 82nd Airborne in 1947, had already done this in Korea. As a volunteer in the 10th SFG, he carried on his service, working with the Montagnards in Vietnam and The Khmer in Cambodia. He fought at Pleiku, Duc Co, and Plei Me, and he ferried supplies and weapons on elephants into Cambodia.

From his enlistment as a buck private in 1945 to his retirement as a lieutenant colonel in 1970, Terry served five tours in combat, trained guerrillas, and earned two combat infantry badges, a Purple Heart, and two Bronze Stars. His experiences contributed to Special Forces' expertise in ambushes and killing techniques. Even as an officer, Terry never shied away from going deep into the jungle in search of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. He personally organized a successful effort to save hundreds of men in one of Special Forces' most critical A-team camps.

As one of the original Green Berets, Terry helped set the standards by which these units have become known. Anyone who has ever wondered what the Green Berets were like during their first two decades will appreciate the riveting action and close-up detail of Terry's true-life story.

This is the story of Curtis "Colt" Terry, one of the original Green Berets. The information for this story came primarily from Colt's personal recollections documented in taped interviews. Many facts were confirmed with fellow paratroopers, military historians, and Special Forces NCOs and officers who served with him.

Colt gave the interviews to leave a record of his experiences. After hearing Colt's story, the author felt that other people should know this man.

A True American Hero and Patriot

Colt Terry is my uncle, and I grew up hearing most of the stories in this book. If you want to know almost first hand what our soldiers were doing in most of the overses conflicts, police actions and wars; then this is the book for you. Colt recalls with great detail people, places, and times where he was in great danger and political turmoil.

He truely is a real modern day hero and I hope that many of our service men and women read this book. I think that it teaches us that people in our military do sacrifice a lot of their lives for our freedom and this book shows what it was like to fight for that freedom.

You can read this book story by story or through its entirety and never get tired of it!

Also, Colt Terry died in September of 2005. His obiturary is in the Orlando Sentinal if you would like to read more of what his life was like.

An enjoyable read

As an avid reader of history, I found this to be a very good start for Mr. Patton. He brings to life a real american hero focusing on both the positive and the negatives of his life. Colt Terry was definitely a hero, serving his country in multiple wars and spending five years under fire. His story needed telling and if you enjoy and learn from history, you will enjoy learning about him.

Mr. Patton does a great job helping the reader understand life in the Korean conflict as well as Vietnam. My only critique is that i would have enjoyed more detail and this book should probably have been a bit longer as a result.

In conclusion, if you have enjoyed Ambrose then this book should also be sitting on your shelves.

Illuminates the "Fog of War"

As someone who has never served in the armed services, this well-researched biography of Colt Terry, a person I had never heard of before, certainly paints a vivid picture of the chaos that accompanies war. The Special Forces, have gotten much greater attention in modern times in Afganistan and Iraq, yet this book doesn't concentrate on the formation of the Green Berets, rather its focus is on a single individual and his life as it relates to the institution. Unusual in the sense that it is easy-to-read, as much as the subject matter is heavy and sometimes disturbing. Well worth it for the lay reader as well as the military historian.

The psychology of happiness made deceptively simple

In this follow-on to his first book, You Can Have What You Want, Michael Neill offers an entertaining, easy-to-read "how-to" book on happiness.

One of the hallmarks of Michael's writing is his ability to take pretty sophisticated stuff and make it simple to understand and put into practice. He uses a blend of personal anecdotes, stories and metaphors, and step-by-step instructions to get his points across.

As with his first book, Michael doesn't take a "woo-woo" approach to the topic. There's no "Angel Therapy" in this book. Michael writes about happiness with rigorous application of applied psychology, yet his style couldn't be more accessible.

The book takes many of the findings of positive psychology and happiness research and rather than just presenting it and saying, "figure out how to do this," he walks you through applying it to your own life.

Part one examines the link between body-state and state-of-mind. Michael gives physical exercises that show you how to control your attitude by controlling your physical body. The exercises can even be done while you're reading.

Part two shows us how the stories we tell ourselves determine our happiness. He weaves in positive psychology's learned optimism research, showing how to change internal stories to be more optimistic and powerful. This section also covers anxiety, fear, and panic attacks.

Part three covers the gamut of our emotions, including self-worth (including a 360-degree feedback exercise to find out how you're perceived by others), gratitude, compassion, attachment to planning, and living a life of inspiration.

All in all, the book's content is excellent. If anything, there's so much here that it's hard to put it all into practice. I've adopted the practices one or two at a time over the last year (I read the UK version the moment it came out) and the improvement in my mood and happiness has been incredible.

When I got a copy of Michael Neill's first book "You Can Have What You Want" I actually began my Amazon review with the statement "It is your duty to be happy, happy people make for a better world. "

In the flow of this thinking I find his next book directly coaches the reader on a way of not only making "Happiness" a feeling, but a way of life.

Wisely, the founding fathers of America included the pursuit of happiness in the charter for citizens of a new kind of country, the United States. For your new kind of life, Neill wisely outlines a pursuit for anyone to make happiness their reality in a fun, easy-to-read manner. I believe this book on happiness is in many ways even better than his first in that it is VERY practical, deeper and illustrates his passion for life that makes you, the reader, begin to make your own peace and success a personal concern. Words are powerful, the words in this book and the words that you use to define your life as Neill makes so clear here.

Michael makes happiness "now" a possibility for anyone; outlining a simple (not simplistic) series of three parts "Feeling Good," "Feeling Better" and finally "Feeling Happy" which are broken into chapters that are easy and fun to digest and understand.

Trust me, you will at least know how you could be happy after reading this, even if you don't give yourself permission to be happy right away. Read it, and open your life to the possibility of it being generally a happy one regardless of your circumstances. I have read a few books on the subject and this is one of the top ones in the field.

Best of all, his book has the important distinction of coaching to be happy NOW, not by looking backwards at your life, because nothing can block happiness now, more than happiness remembered. Michael's book is about your life now. It succeeds on every level that the book aspires to illuminate.

This process of reflection constitutes the central theme, and the collection as a whole seeks to address the shortcomings of what have come to be the dominant interpretations of the civil wars, especially those that see them as secular phenomena, waged in order to destroy monarchy and religion at a stroke. Instead, a number of chapters present a portrait of political thought that is defined by a closer integration of secular and religious law and addresses problems arising from the clash of confessional and political loyalties.

In so doing the volume underlines the extent to which the dispute over the constitution took place within a political culture comprised of many elements of fundamental agreement, and this perspective offers a richer and more nuanced readings of some of the period's central figures, and draws firmer links between the crisis at the centre and its manifestation in the localities.
