When Gini was first diagnosed with her brain cancer, I began to write updates on Caring Bridge and many readers suggested that I should consider writing a book. After much prayer and consideration, the Lord put a Christian publishing group in my path, and they helped me complete The Journey Home. I thank the Lord for allowing me the privilege of completing this project. My desire is that each page would point you to the Lord as the all sufficient "I AM" to meet every need.
This book contains the lessons that Gini and I have learned during our own journey through sickness and grief and pain and worry. What we've learned--or perhaps I should say "relearned," because we've had to learn these things time and again--is that God is good, that His love
is everlasting, and that He has a perfect plan for each of us.
As we discussed trials and our facing death, I asked Gini for a single piece of advice, a kernel of wisdom that she could share with me and with the world. Without hesitation, she answered, "Just rest in the Lord." Those five words are the foundation of this book.
The Bible promises "Thou will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee." And, it promises that "the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." What a joy it is to realize that we can rest and trust in a Sovereign God who controls every detail of our lives. He is holding our hand as we hold one another's hand on our earthly journey that is a journey to our heavenly home.
Gini and I, like you, are on the journey of a "lifetime," an all-too-brief sojourn between the cradle and the grave. And what a glorious journey it has been for us. Despite our recent challenges, Gini and I know that we have been richly blessed by a loving God and a loving family. We believe that God's purpose in blessing us is that we might be a blessing to others.
Although we don't fully understand our Father's plans, we do know where He is leading. He is leading us beyond the inevitable challenges of everyday life. He is leading us beyond the physical pain of sickness and beyond the emotional pain of loss. He is leading us to Himself and to His Son. He is leading us home. He invites us to trust, follow, and rest in Him. When we do, we know that whatever happens in this world, we are secure today, tomorrow, and throughout all eternity.
About the Author
Dr. Gene Baillie grew up in rural Nebraska, the oldest of six children and the first member of his family to attend college. He and Gini were married during his first year of medical school. After medical school, pathology training, and two years of public health service, Gene practiced pathology for 35 years in Anderson, South Carolina.
For many years, he taught technologist and pathology courses at a national level, and he was elected to the board of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, serving as their President in 2002-03. He has written several medical articles, including one with his daughter Becky about Biblical Leprosy.
Gene and Gini raised three biological children, Becky, Kim, and Heather, who are now married, have blessed their parents with eight grandchildren. The Baillies also raised four foster sons who were part of a family of eight children. All eight children are considered part of the Baillie family, as are their children. The Baillie family also includes many spiritual children and grandchildren as well. Gene and Gini have been blessed to have traveled on mission trips to Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Jamaica, Republic of Congo, and Liberia. They have also been a part of planting four churches, including one in Australia, where Gene worked for five years teaching pathology to medical doctors.
He is an elder in the Presbyterian Church in America. Over the years, the Baillie home has served as a site for newly-started churches and as a place for Gene and Gini to teach inductive Bible studies. For over a quarter of a century, Gene has been passionate about reading the Bible through each year, and he has encouraged many others, by weekly accountability, to do the same.

great encouragement

I bought this book at the recommendation of my daughter whose husband has the same brain tumor that Gini has. While their journey is sad (anyone that is in the situation of having to deal with cancer is sad) their faith and devotion to each other is just amazing. Gene gives encouragement to anyone dealing with a life crisis and has passages from the Bible that one can refer to when dealing with different situations. While this book really is their story, it can be an inspiration and help to anyone that is dealing with a life changing situation. I've added Gini & Gene to my prayers and plan on buying another copy of this book to put in our church library.

Experiencing God's Peace in Difficult Times

This book is inspiring and encouraging whether you are in a calm period of life or are suffering through storms. It is arranged in 30 short chapters that allow it to be used as a devotional book over one month. Each chapter ends with applicable Bible verses and quotes of famous Christians. I found the quotes particularly interesting and helpful. Some are contemporary Christians such as Rick Warren and some are Christians from centuries gone by. I will keep this book close at hand for those tough times when I need to be reminded of God's presence, not only from my daily Bible reading, but also from a contemporary brother in the faith.

A book for times of trial in your life

I wrote this book The Journey Home and am pleased that it is now available on Amazon and other outlets. The initial reviews of the book have been very uplifting. Many have been encouraged to seek the Lord and His Word as the only answer for our every need, but especially when we or a loved one go through a difficult trial.
