Like a Jewel with Many Facets

The Thief of Auschwitz is that rarest of novels-- a compelling page-turner whose action is driven by how much we care about the characters.
Jon Clinch is a superb storyteller and he has crafted a beautiful story. His storytelling style is so direct, and so deft that this world that we thought we had already imagined becomes utterly fresh in his hands.
It takes a very special author to follow a family into Auschwitz and dwell with them in that horrible place. Jon Clinch does not sentimentalize his characters, glorify or prettify the violence, or give us an easy way out of the death camp.
Before I started reading, I feared the story might be bleak-- the events that set the back drop for the story are bleak indeed. But Clinch loves his characters in all of their human frailty, and so we love them too.
I thought of The Old Man and the Sea, Of Mice and Men, and other books that seem deceptively simple because they are so perfectly constructed.
I predict that this book will become a classic that is read for years to come.

Rosens for Rememberance -- such a fine novel

I read straight through this in one sitting, it was that compelling. This is a small canvas of a story painted against the infamous backdrop of Auschwitz and the Final Solution, and it is perhaps all the more affecting therefore. The voices of the Rosen family ring clearly and piercingly; I couldn't go to bed until the last page was turned. Max's voice, in particular as an old artist awaiting his retrospective at the National Gallery, is gruffly blunt, often piquant and always evocative.

"No one believes in the future."

It is human nature to feel hunger. We yearn not just for food but also for companionship, respect, freedom, love, fulfillment, and dignity. When everything meaningful is stripped away, however, what is a person to do? Jon Clinch's "The Thief of Auschwitz" poignantly portrays a Jewish family's struggle to hold on to the little they have in a world gone mad.
The story is told in flashback by "cantankerous" Max Rosen, an octogenarian whose paintings are about to be shown in a retrospective at Washington, D.C.'s National Gallery of Art. In 1942, when his family was deported, Max was fourteen, but his father, Jacob, advised him to lie about his age. The boy passed for eighteen and was assigned to a work detail. Max's sister was sent to the left and perished immediately, while Eidel, Jacob's wife and Max's mother, was sent to the right.
One of the book's motifs is an exquisite painting of a little Jewish girl, a portrait that has great meaning for its creator and that would, in an incredible twist of fate, prove to be instrumental in saving someone's life. Ordinary and extraordinary details brilliantly illuminate Cliinch's narrative: There is the painted clock on the station wall at Auschwitz meant to reassure the Jewish prisoners that "all is well," and that they "have arrived at an ordinary village." Jacob, a barber, is assigned to groom the hair of Nazi officers, and is sorely tempted to slash the brutes that he is grooming with his scissors and razor blade. Gretel, an emaciated inmate, squirrels away pieces of paper on which she reports events that she sees and hears. She is determined to seal and bury her accounts in bottles so that whoever finds them will someday know what they all endured.
With his elegiac prose style, Jon Clinch poignantly evokes the Rosen's despair and resignation. They persevere in order to help and support one another. Jacob is not just Max's father, but also his mentor; he tells his son to stay calm and show no signs of ill-temper that might enrage the guards. Although we can guess how this all must end, we grow to care about Jacob, Eidel, and Max. We also mourn the millions who never have the chance to grow old and watch their children and grandchildren take their places in society.
"The Thief of Auschwitz" is about dazed individuals abruptly torn from everything and everyone they cherish. Along with desperation and despair, there are remarkable acts of courage and generosity. The fact that anyone, under these circumstances, retains his ability to feel pity for others is astonishing. In addition, Clinch makes a powerful statement about art and morality. The barbaric Nazis revered great art and music; they could be fond of their children and pets, attend the opera, and then remorselessly slaughter innocents. Tragically, one can be cultured and educated but also devoid of goodness and decency. By telling this intimate, intense, and heartbreaking story so eloquently, Jon Clinch encourages us to imagine what it must have been like to exist on the edge of a precipice.
