M. D. Johnson grew up hunting ring-necked pheasants in northeastern Ohio. He and his wife, award-winning photographer Julia C. Johnson, have collaborated on four previous hunting books. The Johnsons live in Martelle, Iowa.

Seasoned pheasant hunters, M.D. Johnson and his wife Julia collaborate to provide a nostalgic but practical and informative handbook on hunting pheasants that includes strategies for conducting a successful hunt, the guns and ammo to use in hunting America's favorite game bird, what clothing to protective clothing to wear when hunting, gun dogs, hunting tactics, even tasty recipes preparing the birds for eating. Of special note is their comments and observations on pheasant conservation efforts. The text (which is profusely illustrated with the full color photography of Julia Johnson) employs amusing and illustrative anecdotes, informal interviews, and personal observations covering everything from the effects of weather on roosters to the use of nontoxic shellshots. The Johnson's "Guide to Pheasant Hunting" is very highly recommended reading - especially to those new to the sport and its incumbent responsibilities.

Questions Answered for the Novice Pheasant Hunter

It is that time of year again and the first day of Pheasant Season is on the horizon. Like other new pheasant hunters, I have a lot of mundane questions about clothes, shells and other details that need to be answered before the season begins. M.D. Johnson is a very experienced hunter and his comprehensive "Guide to Pheasant Hunting" answered all of my questions and posed new ones that I had not even considered. He is a good writer with a gentle and humorous style. Furthermore, the photos by his wife Pamela Johnston are first rate. All and all, this is a great book and I would recommend it to all newcomers to pheasant hunting. Highly recommended.

i hunt pheasants very year and this book gave great information on why the bird does what it does. i believe that you should read this prior to going on the field
