The volume ends in 1920, when the unique features of the Western Reserve of Ohio, the architecture, the landmarks, the New England lifestyle, had largely faded into American history as a result of industrialism, urbanism, and the pressure of a changing ethnic base.

Gladys Haddad is professor of American studies at Case Western Reserve University, director of the Western Reserve Studies Symposia, and professor emerita of American Studies at Lake Erie College. Her other publications include Anthology of Western Reserve Literature (Kent State University Press, 1992), with David Anderson, and Ohio's Western Reserve (Kent State University Press, 1988), with Harry Lupold.

Interesting read if you want to know about Cleveland

Some good readings in this book but the copy I received was dirty and was a paperback with pencil writing on the cover. The text is heavily weighted toward Cleveland. There are other cities and counties in the Western Reserve.

Great Perspectives of the Victors

This textbook has some great primary sources in it, and many of the readings are very interesting. If you want to learn about the details of life for early Cleveland settlers, this a good book. However, it only gives the perspective of those who settled in the Western Reserve. The reader does not get any insight as to how the natives of the land felt before and after their land was taken by the Europeans. I think that would have been interesting. Overall, biased, but good read.
