On January 17, 1979, driven by new information that some of the worst criminals in the state's penitentiaries were about to be released (and fears that James Earl Ray might be one of them), a small bipartisan group chose to take charge. Senior Democratic leaders, friends of the sitting governor, together with the Republican governor-elect Lamar Alexander (now U.S. Senator from Tennessee), agreed to oust Blanton from office before another night fell. It was a maneuver unique in American political history.

About the Author
In his early career, Keel Hunt was a reporter, editorial writer, Washington correspondent, and City Editor for the Nashville Tennessean. He left the newspaper to join Lamar Alexander's successful campaign for Governor of Tennessee. Following the 1978 election, he was appointed Special Assistant to the Governor, serving as a speechwriter and coordinator of the Governor's Policy Group. Since 1986 he has been a speechwriter and public affairs consultant.

A very well-written book. I lived in Nashville during this time and remember much of this happening. Mr. Hunt's book gave me a lot of details is didn't know. I recommend this book highly.

A Lesson For Today

I was struck by various emotions reading Coup: The Day the Democrats Ousted Their Governor, Put Republican Lamar Alexander in Office Early, and Stopped a Pardon Scandal by Keel Hunt.
First, I was back-spaced to a period of time when each day brought new disclosures about the abuse of power of Governor Ray Blanton and members of his administration. This was Tennessee's Watergate, replete with the drama, characters, and tension that Watergate exposed. For those of us in the media at the time of the book's plot, it was a time of excitement, challenge, and awe.
In addition to Keel Hunt's masterful presentation of the facts, players and events of the legal ouster is Governor Blanton and early "inster" of Lamar Alexander as Governor, I am struck by the difference in moral fiber between those who took part in the events and many of those in politics today. To stop the possible early release from prison authorized by Ray Blanton required the subordination of the political affiliation of the principal players and the elevation of their sense of duty--of doing what was right. If such a crisis loomed today, I doubt if the principals would step up and make the right call as did those characterized in Coup. Ideology, pettiness, and turf-protection would rule rather than the greater cause.
Kudos to Keel Hunt, who was there at the time and brings the right voice to the story, for reminding us what happened and what is possible.
