Review

“This book is to be highly recommended to anyone who has an interest in medical ethics. I cannot think of another anthology quite like this: it combines a detailed account of classic themes in medical ethics with original exploration of novel challenges. And it does more than this: it is rich in case studies and other pedagogical devices, which render the book an invaluable resource for anyone involved in medical ethics education.”

—Simona Giordano, Reader in Bioethics, CSEP, The University of Manchester

“Boylan’s latest edition of the text Medical Ethics combines his unifying philosophical considerations with the individual perspectives of other top-notch bioethicists, less well-known essays with classic articles.  It should prove to be an excellent resource in the classroom, supporting both careful reflection and meaningful discussion.”

—D. Micah Hester, Chief of the Division of Medical Humanities, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, College of Medicine

Good Starter Text Notable for Featuring Both Classic and Fresh Articles
By Jared Rhoads
Medical Ethics, Second Edition, is a good starter medical ethics text. At 386 pages, the book is much shorter than many other texts, yet it still manages to cover a fair amount of ground. In this heavily updated edition, editor Michael Boylan has made a concerted effort to create a volume that contains a mix of classic articles from well-known thinkers (e.g., Noonan, Kass, Thomson) and new, specially commissioned pieces.

I purchased this text primarily for the essay by the late John David Lewis, entitled "There is No 'Right' to Healthcare." This clear and powerful new essay espouses philosophic ideas that are not often given a hearing in academia. I applaud Boylan's decision to include it.

Too Complicated.
By DS
There are so many good medical ethics books that are so much better than this. This book just makes learning about medical ethics much more complicated than it needs to be.
