Hugo Ch?vez passed away in March 2013 after a two-year battle with cancer, prompting much speculation about the impact of his death. What will a post-Ch?vez future look like, not only in Venezuela but also in the region? In Latin America in the Post-Ch?vez Era, Luis Fleischman examines Ch?vezÆs highly controversial Bolivarian revolution, which has expanded beyond Venezuela to other countries in South America and whose sphere of influence also extends to Central America and the Caribbean. In this context, the author systematically shows how an emerging authoritarianism in the region plays an important role in defining the geo-political context of the region.

Review
“Luis Fleischman goes where the Director of National Intelligence and other senior officials of the U.S administration fear to tread. He undertakes a sober, hard-headed look at the mischief makers in the Western Hemisphere. Dr. Fleischman offers an important study of the causes and consequences of radical anti-Americanism in Latin America. It is a work of enduring value, even if El Commandante Chavez passed from the earthly scene on March 5, 2013.”—DR. RAY WALSER, senior policy analyst, Heritage Foundation (DR. RAY WALSER)
“This is an invaluable book, with an enviable grasp of the mounting threat of the Bolivarian Revolution--the handiwork of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, and carried forward by an alarming number of regional allies--to the security and stability of South American democracies and to the United States itself. Fleischman moves sure-footedly from country to country, to the Western Hemisphere as a whole, and then far beyond, to Chavez’s close friends in Tehran. Bravo!”—DR. MICHAEL LEDEEN, Freedom Scholar, Foundation for the Defense of Democracies; former special advisor to the secretary of state; and author of Virgil’s Golden Egg and Other Neapolitan Miracles (DR. MICHAEL LEDEEN)
“Latin America in the Post-Chávez Era is a comprehensive and objective analysis of the phenomenon of radical movements and regimes in Latin America associated with the late Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez’s ‘twenty-first-century socialism.’ Luis Fleischman traces the origins of these movements to a crisis of legitimacy of deficient democratic political systems and points out that Chávez’s regime is a truly revolutionary project whose very nature and ideology might have far-reaching consequences for the region. He concludes with a thoughtful set of policy prescriptions, in the short and long term, to halt the advance of these revolutionary movements and strengthen and consolidate democracy in the region. This book is an important contribution to the debate on the future of Latin America and the U.S.-Latin American relationship.”—DR. ANGEL RABASA, senior political scientist, Rand Corporation (DR. ANGEL RABASA)

Reality Check
By snakebite
Dr. Fleischman is a first rate analyst, and I as a Venezuelan that has been involved for years in the tragedy that my country has become, I really appreciate what this book has to offer. It is valuable not only to regular folks that would find its reading "interesting", but politicians, decision makers and governments would be wise to read in detail the dangers to America that are unveiled in the book. The conclusions of Dr. Fleischman are devastating as it does away with many preconceived ideas about Latin American politics and sounds an alarm bell that all interested should be listening to. Some of those conclusions, particularly about the security threads to the the US are NOT to be taken lightly.

The Truth Will Set Venezuela Free
By Tom Spencer
How to Hijack a Country and use its resources to become an Emperor?
Luis Fleischman, a political science professor, explains in 150 tightly written pages how it was done and what the evolution of the Chavez robbery portends. He does it objectively, analyzing all sides in a balanced, clear way.
Hugo Chavez first gained power in the name of Bolivar, constantly tutored by his mentor, Fidel Castro. Then he robbed many of the Venezuelan oil resources, spreading the money among his military Generals, and around Latin America, to build alliances with Ecuador, Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua, the FARC, Iran, and yes, Hezbollah.
Dr. Fleischman meticulously explains it all and warns us all that Maduro, heavily influenced and managed by Cuba and Iran, will march inexorably toward a totalitarian State. Fleischman advises the USA to use its influence in the OAS and stop this train before it reaches Tipping Point Station.
This book is a great addition to the discussion now happening in living rooms of Latin America and the United States.
It also raises substantial questions as to the future in this Hemisphere of what we commonly refer to as Democracy.

Monroe Doctrine - Where are you???
By Lee Lazerson
Professor Fleischman's "Latin America in the Post-Chavez Era" is a wonderfully easy read on a topic that is vitally important to the economic and security interests of the United States and Middle East. Prof. Fleischman very methodically paints the picture for the reader on the importance of Latin America to Iran; its agent in terror, Hezbollah; and the strategic interests of Russia and China in the hemisphere...all to the detriment of the United States. This is a must read for anyone that has an educational or economic interest in Latin America.
