Praise for Working With Grieving and Traumatized Children and Adolescents

"This much-needed book effectively argues for the use of structured activities as the basis for exploring trauma-specific questions in clinical work with traumatized children and adolescents. Numerous examples of children's artwork enhance the book and illustrate the effectiveness of the treatment. The authors' methods have been used successfully for many years and represent a major contribution to the study of trauma that will be welcomed by both students and seasoned practitioners."
—Nancy Boyd Webb, DSW, LICSW, RPT-S Professor of Social Work Emerita, Fordham University, Author: Play Therapy With Children in Crisis

"The authors provide a clear theoretical framework and demonstrate practical sensory-based activities so kids can discover and reconnect with their bodies' agency and vitality. Refreshingly, this vehicle creates an emotionally safe journey for the child into the mystery of the experiential, embedded in implicit memory. It's chock-full of invitations to explore self-impressions and worldviews in a way that children feel seen, not assessed."
—Peter A. Levine, PhD, and Maggie Kline, MS, LMFT, Coauthors: Trauma Through a Child's Eyes and Trauma-Proofing Your Kids

"This much-needed book effectively argues for the use of structured activities as the basis for exploring trauma-specific questions in clinical work with traumatized children and adolescents. Numerous examples of children’s artwork enhance the book and illustrate the effectiveness of the treatment. The authors’ methods have been used successfully for many years and represent a major contribution to the study of trauma that will be welcomed by both students and seasoned practitioners"
—Nancy Boyd Webb, DSW, LICSW, RPT-S, Professor of Social Work Emerita, Fordham University
Author: Play therapy with Children in Crisis, 3rd ed.

"In the sea of rhetoric about trauma-informed care, What Matters Most delivers answers that will make a difference to young people right now. This book equips professionals working at all levels with young people impacted by trauma to do their work differently, incorporating one fundamental principle that stands above all else: this work is not about doing to children, but being with children, and empowering them in their own healing journey. From neuroscience to relational practice, this book is the most compelling and practical story about trauma treatment told to date."
—Kiaras Gharabaghi, Ph.D, Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada

"This book is a page-turner, a comment usually reserved for action novels. Rich with recent neuroscience findings, the impact of trauma on the brain, case studies, and specific interventions, Working with Grieving and Traumatized Children and Adolescents is a must-have resource for anyone who works with and cares about young people of any age. As a foster care survivor and now a college professor, I am grateful for Dr. Steele's contribution."
—John Seita, Ed.D., School of Social Work, Michigan State University

"Building on years of developing and researching structured sensory interventions, the authors share poignant stories of resilience, integrate findings from neuroscience and empirical studies, and offer simple and effective interventions that build safe and secure relationships for grieving and traumatized children and teens."

Good, practical tools
By Afia
I liked the authors' approach, the way they present a range of tools (activities) that will help traumatized children.

Almost from the start I got bombarded with their acronym, SITCAP. This happened to me because I read the book and they hardly present anything without bludgeoning me repeating over the head with their advertisement. However, to make a big difference in the treatment of traumatized and grieving children and adolescents, a service provider in fact needs to promote. Therefore, I'm forgiving on that point.

But it was really difficult for me because every time I was deep into what the authors are saying, I got distracted by the constant use of SITCAP. After maybe 15 pages into the book, the use of SITCAP would throw me off course. I repeatedly got diverted into thinking more about how organizations are forced to brand themselves. My impression was that there must be more to why practitioners were forced to change how they would normally talk and write.

On balance, there isn't an easy and reliable way to know when repetition gets to be overkill when one is branding a service. For this reason I searched and saw that SITCAP has been used since at least 1997. From my reading of the book, the methods used by the authors appears to be top notch and anybody going into the field will benefit from this information.

Good for professionals
By Connie (She who hikes with dogs)
This is one of those oversized books that any beginner counselor or professional working with young people needs to be familiar with. Many of the applications work with adults, too, so this is helpful. But like others have stated, there us much self-promotion in the book that immediately takes a star away from the rating level.

While a parent and/or teacher would benefit from the content, the majority of people who would get great use out of this are psychologists and counselors, as the exercises are geared toward small group sessions.

Who is the audience? Good book with unclear focus
By AmazonJavaJunki
As a college instructor who teaches courses in a related field, I was very interested in reviewing this book since there is tremendous need for clear, concise and relevant information on a variety of trauma/crisis events. However, the intended audience for this book is unclear...the title "working with..." seems to indicate professionals but psychologists/counselors would likely be less inclined to adopt a single specific modality unless already familiar with the authors. Those who are not familiar would likely be off-put by the repeated mention of the somewhat obvious agenda presented by the authors who have a tendency for self promotion. Aside from that factor, much of the information would also be redundant making this less than optimal for someone already in the field.

Teachers and other educational staff would also be a prime candidate for the topic of this book and indeed, there is a tremendous need for such information however, the emphasis on treatment would negate the benefit since educators (aside from school counselors/psychologists) would not have the appropriate training/background to make use of the book.

Parents and other professionals would likewise find the baseline information, examples etc helpful/beneficial but suffer from the same quandary due to lack of cohesive target audience. In short, the focus on specific treatment modalities combined with basic information makes it unclear who/what this book is designed to do.

Having said that, the topic is an important one and there is substantial unmet need. I only wish the authors had taken time to more clearly determine their target audience then write either a basic book for educators/other in need of an introduction to the issues or an advanced book for professionals in the field.
